We embarked on our journey to world class operations within our L&D function last year and have gone through a number changes to our team including structure, roles and responsibilities and material governance in the last 12 months. These changes underpinned a project entitled 'Training Re-engineering' which created an induction programme across our organisation that won the 'Blended Learning Solution of the Year' at this years World of Learning Awards.

We are now looking to benchmark our progress and 'as is' state with other L&D functions and organisations and I was hoping that there may be others on this network who could assist or would also benefit from this exercise.

The areas we are looking to benchmark against are:

Diagnostic tools
Learning media / tools
Project governance

If anyone is carrying out a similar exercise this year or feel that you would also benefit from this or would be happy to support and become involved then please let me know.

You might find that the IITT's (Institute of IT Training) accreditation programme fits the bill (www.iitt.org.uk). I've also done some work recently on the L&D Capability Curve, I've attached a ppt slide of it.Hope that helps.

I work in the L & D core team for Xerox Europe and I have worked on a couple of projects that I think would be of interest to you: launched an online evaluation survey and report tool across 14 countries and in 12 languages, and I am currently leading our Learning 2.0 project. We are just about to launch our virtual classroom solution. I would be really interested in hearing about your experiences in evaluation and learning media/tools so that we can both benchmark!

I work in L&D management at Janssen-Cilag, a division of Johnson & Johnson. I'm always interested in benchmarking what we do, and discussions on this are always thought provoking and productive.


We have done quite a lot of this of activity already over the last few years as part of our analyst research on corporate learning innovation. We also run corporate roundtable discussions on associated sub-topics. RBS has been involved in this as well as other major banks and financial services organisations as well as other FTSE100 companies. You may be interested in some of the work of the Towards Maturity project (www.towardsmaturity.org) of which I'm involved. We undertook a major piece of research with 300 organisations contributing at the end of last year. This resulted in us publishing our latest benchmarking report which is free to download from the site. This benchmarking report entitled 'Driving Business Benefit' provides insight for organisations on where they are in their journey with learning technologies. It allows them to compare against other organisations, both generally and within their sector, and we work with a number of these organisations in helping them form an action plan on where to channel their resources and efforts. I'm doing some work with the EFMD (European Foundation for Management Development) in the area of workplace learning.

EFMD (a misnomer as the organisation also provides services to corporate L&D more generally) has a well structured benchmarking process called CLIP - the Corporate Learning Improvement Process:

"CLIP is a mechanism for quality benchmarking, mutual learning and sharing of good practice that is monitored by a Steering Committee made up of leading professionals in the field, including Chief Learning Officers from major companies, with input from Executive Education specialists from major European Business Schools".
