Creating effective Social Learning with a Scaffolded approach

Julian Stodd, Author, The Social Leadership Handbook

As we move increasingly beyond the classroom, we have a whole range of options at our disposal: from mobile to social, the ways we learn are limitless. But how do we ensure that the learning is effective? In this session, I will present a model for creating 'scaffolded social learning', where we choreograph the learning across the different modalities.

It's a model of learning design for the Social Age, one that focusses on the 'sense making' function of our social communities and provides space for exploration, reflection and performance support.

  • Learning is changing: we need to adapt our methodology to meet the needs of social learners
  • It's not about creating one linear path, but rather layers of knowledge that let us build meaning
  • We need to engineer in spaces for exploration and reflection
  • We need to understand the co-creative processes of social learning
  • Formal learning is abstract: social learning engages learners in their everyday reality

In the Social Age, everything has changed: it's about sharing, learning and agility. Julian is curious about how we develop this capability and is sharing his learning as he goes on his blog at www.julianstodd.wordpress.com

Making personalized, collaborative learning a reality
Joel Hellermark, CEO & Founder, Sana Labs

Collaboration and personalisation are two trends that dominate contemporary thinking about workplace learning.

Collaborative learning involves synchronous, interactive live sessions with groups of learners, and is powered by social dynamics and community.

Personalization focuses on self-paced instruction that responds to the unique needs of every learner, and is powered and scaled by AI.

Is it possible to combine these two? According to Joel it is. In this session, he will explore what it means to combine these two approaches in entirely new ways—using social dynamics to increase engagement while responding to each learner’s needs to improve learning outcomes. Join us to explore the exciting possibilities of personalized, collaborative learning.
