  • Hi Justine,
I imagine we have a similar problem. In the past our trainers completed the CiPD in training and development, this stopped and our delivery trainers complete something called totally training, for experienced trainers though there is little external development available at the moment. In terms of assessing competence do you observe trainers delivering against a checklist? Depending on their skill set and role one of the big things in my team at the mo is recognising the importance of informal learning and how reading blogs and contributing to forums like this can help you grow and develop your professional expertise. The other thing i was going to mention, do your trainers do any sort of online delivery?

  • Do you want to get somewhere or achieve something specific if so choose a road but accept it might not be a straight one.
Consistency is one of the main challenges, I had a team and there were difficulties, I decided I wanted them all professionally qualified teachers and assessors. This brought in an element of independent assessment against a National Standard.
My project then did not succeed because of a lack of buy in from more senior management and some trainers having their own influences. Maybe poor planning on my part!
Some years down the line they are all now doing the qualifications because of a new senior management who apply a simple formula, do it or move on.
360 feedback is OK but not always acted on, If you can get it independent assessment of practice is good but use National Standards not your own, or reduce the standards down, it is then an open and more objective process.
I wok for a few organisations and they assess all of their trainers, must like me as I have done a couple of their own employees.
